Powwows are the part of the Native American culture that bring together passions through dancing, singing, visiting, renewing old friendships and making new ones. CBC News published an article on Gabriel Whiteduck who has now been sober for seven years and says that it was the Powwow culture that helped him heal from his addiction. “It was a way to put that down and take up something. I picked up the drum and dancing, I was able to really apply myself positively.” Powwow culture had a powerful effect on Whiteduck and he is now a teacher, dancer, drummer and singer for the Algonquin First Nation. Whiteduck truly believes that the powwow is a way to express your culture and not a way to teach how to be Aboriginal. Read more about Gabriel Whiteduck’s transformation HERE.
